K,well i want to work with exotic animals.
More along the lines of primates, big cats,or reptiles!
What are some jobs either in zoos or other places that will have me work hands on with them.
I know i can work in a zoo…..but what should i go to college for? Beside zoology?
Can you give me some links and sites with the job description and other useful stuff?!
Please help in any way possible…Thanks in advance~Rachel
You will need college education, but there really isn’t another option besides Zoology if you want to work with animals. There are a lot of Zoology majors though, and you can find one that tailors itself to the career you are aiming for. Conservation biology, Ecology, Mammalogy, Marine Biology, Vetrenarian, Animal husbandry are usually managed through the biology or zoology department.
As for hands-on careers, you have three possibilities:
1. Work with a zoo or educational facility that keeps exotic animals for education, preservation and research.
They need people who keep cages clean, people to prepare and feed specialized diets, specialized veterinarians, experts on breeding species. Each has different levels of schooling and experience required.
2. Work with a place that keeps exotic animals for entertainment. They have the same careers as a zoo would have, but usually need trainers to teach the animals tricks to increase their entertainment value.
3. You travel to the exotic animal’s habitat.
You can work for a university and conduct research on animal behavior and habitat, become a wildlife photographer, or work for a non-profit or governmental agency like WWF or the USFWS.
I suggest you volunteer or get an internship at a zoo or for a local wildlife agency to get a feel for what careers you are most interested in. (Having experience like this will also help you get a job later, and may help you get into the college you want). Talk to an advisor at a university to learn what majors they have and what careers they prepare you for. Talk to people who have the jobs you are interested in and ask them for advice.
There really are a lot of possibilities.
